When shipping goods internationally to Australia, including parcels from overseas, it is important to consider customs procedures and taxation. Depending on the nature and value of the shipment, tax payments and duties may be required. Here are a few key factors to consider:
- Low-value parcels, usually less than A$1,000 (about $700), are usually exempt from customs duties and do not require an electronic customs declaration.
- If the value of the shipment exceeds A$1,000, taxes and duties may have to be paid. This usually includes Goods and Services Tax (GST) and customs duties.
- When a parcel is delivered to Australia, the courier service may require payment of taxes and duties before it is handed over to the recipient. Some courier companies provide the option of pre-paying taxes and duties through an online service.
- In certain cases, especially when shipping certain categories of goods, you may be required to provide a certificate of origin and a power of attorney to the customs agent.
- In addition to taxes and duties, it is important to remember that there are bans on bringing certain categories of goods into Australia for security and economic protection reasons.
- If more than one parcel of identical merchandise is sent to the same recipient within 72 hours, they may be treated as a consignment and their value will be calculated cumulatively.
It is important to note that each case may be different and it is advisable to seek the advice of professionals in the field of customs clearance and international shipping of goods.
